Jørn Olsen presents his report at Radøy
At the annual Emigration Festival at Western Norway Emigration Center at Radøy north of Bergen in July 2008, Jørn Olsen from Skien presented his report on "The American Dream - From Serkland in Siljan to South Minnesota 1866".
The headlines of Jørn's report are as follows:
Peder Pedersen Serkland was born in Serkland in Siljan in Telemark on April 10, 1837. He married Helene Sigurdsdatter Moholt, born July 29, 1835 at Moholt in Siljan. They emigrated to the U.S. in 1866.
Their son Johan Christian Serkland was born on February 23, 1872 in St. James in Minnesota. Johan married Berthe Seline Pedersen on June 4, 1904 in Rothsay, Minnesota. Berthe Seline was born December 1, 1875.
Johan Christian Serkland studied medicine, and he established his doctor's office in Rothsay, Minnesota. His office, the whole building, was donated to Western Norway Emigration Center at Radøy. People from Radøy pulled it down at Rothsay, piece by piece, transported it to Radøy, and put it up again at the Emigration Center.
Today you can visit Dr. Serkland's office at Radøy.
Jørn Olsen's report contains a lot of information about the Serkland family, descendants of Peder Pedersen Serkland, which today is a well known family in Rothsay and in Minnesota.
One of the visiting ladies from Minnesota at the Emigration Festival 2008 was born in Dr. Johan Christian Serkland's office !
On the picture you see Jørn Olsen presenting some framed pictures from his report. The pictures will be put on the walls at Dr. Serkland's office at the Emigration Center at Radøy.
What we now hope is that Jørn Olsen's Serkland report gets translated into English, and that Western Norway Emigration Center takes steps to get it done.
